Dynamic concert streaming

In 2020, ORF Audio Recording will test a new facet of dynamic concert streaming. The ORF surround recordings are encoded as binaural audio files and placed online. During playback, the head movements of the listeners are tracked in real-time.

Moving your own head changes the spatial representation of what you hear and creates an amazingly realistic sound experience. With a computer, webcam, and headphones, anyone can try out this new way of hearing for a month from home.

“Hyperopia” is a piece that seeks the new in the familiar. Your own listening habits play just as important a role as the lack of clarity about what you hear. This ambiguity is intended to encourage more conscious listening – with the intention of picking up the audience and leaving them halfway there. The aim is to reflect on our behaviors and to reevaluate what you think you know.

As Joni Mitchel once said: „If you’re listening to my music – and thinking about me – then I’m not doing my job – if you’re listening to my music and thinking about your experiences – then we’re getting somewhere.“
