1922: the chopper and the talkies are invented, the Soviet Union is founded. 1923: Japan, China and Iran are hit by devastating earthquakes, the first radio stations go on air. But – above all: the composers Xenakis and Ligeti are born 100 years ago, equidistant from the turn of the year 1922/23.
With two concerts, a „coda“ featuring Iannis Xenakis (*1922) and a “kick-off” devoted to György Ligeti (*1923), Klangforum Wien marks these major anniversaries, staking out two colossal landmarks in our present sense of time which, due to the current challenges, is at risk of drifting off into a confused and disoriented loss of history. In those days, when Xenakis and Ligeti were born, much came to an end but, at the same time, morphed into starting-points for new departures.
Klangforum Wien’s new cycle takes this into account: An enquiry into what the future may bring, as well as an awareness of the history of new developments define its contents.
